Unit Definition (poncelet) The poncelet is a unit of power formerly used in France but now obsolete. The poncelet is defined to be the power required to raise a mass of 100 kilograms at a velocity of 1 meter per second. This is equivalent to 980.665 watts or exactly 4/3 metric horsepower (1.315 traditional horsepower). The unit was named for the French mathematician and engineer Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788-1867). It was replaced in French engineering by the metric horsepower (cheval vapeur).
