| Convert from manzana [Costa Rican] to oxgang |
Unit Definition (manzana [Costa Rican]) The manzana is a traditional unit of land area in Central America. The manzana is the area of a square 100 varas on a side; it thus varies according to the length of the vara. The Costa Rican manzana equals 0.698 896 hectares or about 1.727 acres. Very similar units are used in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The word manzana means an apple, but the unit is probably related to manzanar, orchard. Unit Definition (oxgang) The oxgang is an old English unit of land area equal to 1/8 hide or roughly 15 acres (6 hectares). The hide was considered the area a farmer could plow with a team of 8 oxen, so an oxgang was the area he could plow with a single ox. The unit was also called the bovate, from the Latin word bos for an ox or cow.
