Unit Definition (homestead) The homestead is a historic unit of area in the United States, equal to 160 acres (64.75 hectares). Under the Homestead Act passed by Congress in 1862, settlers in the western states were allowed to take title to a homestead of 160 acres of land by registering a claim, settling on the land, and cultivating it. A homestead equals 1/4 square mile, or 1/4 section in U.S. government terminology. Unit Definition (caballeria [Cuba]) The caballeria [Cuba] is a traditional unit of land area. In Cuba, the caballeria is a smaller unit equal to 33.162 acres or 13.420 hectares, but in the Dominican Republic it is a larger unit equal to 1200 tareas or about 75.4 hectares (186.5 acres).
