The unit was named after Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), the Italian-American physicist who built the first nuclear reactor. Unit Definition (cuadra) The cuadra is a traditional Latin American unit of distance. The cuadra is generally equal to 100 varas (about 84 meters or 275 feet) in Central America and northern South America. In Argentina and Chile, the cuadra is equal to 150 varas (roughly 130 meters or 410 feet). Note that the cuadra is also used as a measurement for area, in this case it refers to a square cuadra.
