Common Length Conversions Metric Length Conversions Unit Definition (caliber) The caliber is a unit used to express the bore diameter of a gun. Traditionally, the diameter is stated in inches, so that ".22 caliber" refers to a pistol having a bore of 0.22 inches (5.588 mm). So the caliber is actually equivalent to the inch. The usage of the term "caliber" is actually now in decline, because bore diameters of many guns are now stated in millimeters. "Caliber" is the American spelling; elsewhere the unit is often spelled "calibre." Unit Definition (mil) The mil is a unit of distance equal to 0.001 inch: a "milli-inch," in other words. Mils are used, primarily in the U.S., to express small distances and tolerances in engineering work. One mil is exactly 25.4 microns, just as one inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters. This unit is also called the thou. With the increasing use of metric units in the U.S., many machinists now avoid the use of "mil" because that term is also a handy slang for the millimeter.
