Unit Definition (acre) The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and US customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre. Unit Definition (section) The section is a traditional unit of area in the U.S., equal to 1 square mile. This unit is used by the U.S. Public Land Survey System, which applies to most of the U.S. except for the original 13 states, Alaska, and Hawaii.
