Unit Definition (acre) The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and US customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre. Unit Definition (bovate) The Bovate is an old English unit of land area equal to 1/8 hide. This was roughly 15 acres or 6 hectares. The word comes from the Latin bovis, an ox, indicating that the bovate was an area that could be farmed with the help of one ox.
